There will be arts and crafts for younger children, and middle and high school students will speak. Mercer County Community College will host a celebration of King’s birthday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kerney Hall, 102 N. Broad St. The event, “Celebrating Our Future,” will showcase performances by musicians, storytellers, and dancers, and will include a viewing of the presidential inaguration at noon. Trenton Cities of Service is organizing a day of service to commemorate King’s life from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Trenton Central High School, 400 Chambers St. Volunteers will make posters focused on opportunities available after high school graduation. The Arts Council of Princeton, Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum and the Historical Society of Princeton will bring King’s ideals to life through puppet shows and other artistic expressions from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts at 102 Witherspoon St. Children will create puppets and practice peaceful ways to resolve conflicts. Professor Anne Cheng, who specializes in race studies, will be the keynote speaker at Princeton University’s celebration at 1 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall on Nassau Street. The Arts High School Gospel Choir will perform, and the MLK Day Journey Award will be presented to a member of the university community.
Doreen Finkle, Brett Rappaport, and Anwar Salandy will host a Restoring Freedoms event at the New Jersey Statehouse, 110 W. State St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include musical performances, speeches by members of several political and religious groups and the presentation of a community service achievement award.
