TRENTON — Four men allegedly involved in a deadly drive-by shooting on Route 29 in January 2011 have been indicted by a grand jury.

Anthony Marks, 24, and William Mitchell, 24, both of Trenton, were indicted on murder charges, weapons offenses and theft charges in connection with the killing of 23-year-old Daquan Dowling.

Jamar Square, 19, of Lawrence was initially charged with murder but in the indictment he is only charged with possession of a handgun. The initial murder charged was dropped.

Marks, Mitchell, Square and the fourth co-defendant, Louis Alvarado, 22, of Trenton were all charged with stealing the vehicle the shooters were allegedly driving the night of the shooting.

Dowling was behind the wheel of a friend’s car, driving northbound on Jan. 30, 2011 at around 6:30 p.m., when another car drove up alongside and sprayed his car with bullets, police said. Dowling’s passenger attempted to regain control of the car while keeping his head down and bracing for more gunfire. The car stopped when it hit a bridge near Memorial Drive, police said.

Dowling’s passenger got a ride with a stranger on West State Street to get away from the crime scene, but eventually returned to cooperate with the investigation, police said.

The shooters lost control of their car, which spun around and came to a rest facing against the flow of traffic, police said. The men allegedly fled on foot toward the Richard J. Hughes Criminal Justice complex, leaving a trail of physical evidence.

Police said the shooters were unable to see inside the car Dowling was driving because the windows were tinted. He was an innocent victim and did not appear to be their target, police said.
