TRENTON – A city man was shot in the foot following gunplay in the Wilbur section last night, police said.

The 33-year-old was in the area of Hampton Avenue and Walnut Avenue when he was hit, Lt. Steve Varn said. Officers, who heard shots around 11:36 p.m., began searching the area, Varn said.

The officers found the victim on Greenwood Avenue several blocks from the shooting with a gunshot wound to his right foot, Varn said. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center and given treatment for the injury, which was not believed to be life-threatening.

Police had no information regarding how the man had been shot or on any suspects. No descriptions were available.

Despite the shooting’s close proximity to the murder of 18-year-old James Austin on Tuesday, the two crimes are not believed to be connected, Varn said.

Detectives are investigating. Anyone with information should call police at (609) 989-4170 or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
