on April 03, 2013 at 12:12 PMTRENTON — A city man was assaulted and shot at during a robbery in the Hillcrest section yesterday afternoon, police said.
Officers were sent to the first block of Maple Avenue just before 5:30 p.m. on reports that shots had been fired in the area.
“A short time later, an individual came to the West District reporting he was shot at and pistol-whipped,” Lt. Steve Varn said today.
The 33-year-old man was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for a head contusion.
The victim, who lives in the area, said he was on Maple Avenue when two men approached him and said, “Give it up,” Varn said. The suspects hit the victim with the butt of a handgun and chased after him as he tried to run away.
One of the suspects fired several shots, which did not hit the victim. Nothing was taken during the assault, but the victim said he dropped his cell phone on the ground and it was reported as stolen, Varn said.
The victim stopped a friend who was driving by and was driven to the police substation off North Hermitage Avenue.
Police described the suspects as black males, one of them 5 foot 7 inches tall and 160 pounds, wearing a gray hoodie and armed with a handgun, and the other 5 foot 5 inches tall and 150 pounds, wearing a blue hoodie and blue jeans.
Detective Ryan Woodhead is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (609) 989-4170 or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
