TRENTON— A city man was critically injured by a bullet to the abdomen during a drive-by shooting just before noon yesterday in the West Ward, police said.

The West Ward was also the scene of a shooting the night before. Two men were shot in a housing project on Oakland Street at around 7 p.m. when a gunman walked up to a crowd of people and opened fire, police said yesterday. They are expected to survive their injuries.

No arrests have been made in that case, or in yesterday’s broad daylight drive-by shooting which happened on the first block of North Hermitage Avenue.

In that case, the 18-year-old victim was standing outside the Valerio & Jimenez Deli-Grocery when a car drove by with at least one man shooting from inside, Lt. Steve Varn said. An unknown number of shots were fired, striking the man once but not hitting anyone else, Varn said. Police were not sure if the victim was the intended target of the drive-by.

In the Oakland Street shooting, the victims, both city residents, were among a group standing outside when the suspect walked up and started shooting, Varn said. A 24-year-old man was shot in the chest and groin, while a 25-year-old was shot in the groin, he said.

Both men were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where they underwent emergency surgery and were listed in stable condition.

Full suspect descriptions were not available for either shooting. Anyone with information on these crimes should call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
