TRENTON – One man was shot dead on a West Ward street tonight in the city’s eighth homicide of the year, police said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was killed on the first block of Bryn Mawr Avenue shortly after 7:30 p.m., Lt. Steve Varn said at the scene. Detectives are out on the street investigating the crime.

A resident of the street, who would not give his name out of fear of retaliation, said he heard two gunshots from a large-caliber weapon.

The crime scene stretched nearly half the lane of the avenue, a dead-end street with an open area at its top that serves as a cut-through to the Eisenhower and Wilson-Haverstick housing projects beyond.

Detectives were seen clustered around a white Dodge sedan at the end of the street, its lights on and motor running, but no one inside. A fenced-in front yard on its passenger side was littered with bloody clothing and a hat, which a police officer bagged as evidence.

A full description of the suspect was not immediately available. The victim is believed to be 21 years old, police said.
