on April 27, 2013 at 8:10 AMTRENTON — Mayor Tony Mack continued a city tradition yesterday as he presided over the 26th Annual Clean Communities Litter March.
More than 700 city schoolchildren joined with nonprofit groups and government organizations to clean up trash throughout the community, Mack’s office reported.
“The annual litter march has become a staple in the city of Trenton because it instills a sense of community ownership in young people,” Mack said in a statement.
Students divided into teams complete with placards listing the team name in an effort to have a friendly competition as to how much litter could be picked up. Awards were given out at the conclusion of the day’s event.
“One of our aims is to encourage residents to take an active interest in the health of our community and the litter march does just that with our youngest residents,” Mack said.
The day kicked off yesterday morning on the steps of City Hall before two hours of trash pickup and recycling collection at selected sites throughout the city. A free lunch was provided at noon in Mill Hill Park, where the awards were given out.Participants received a free T-shirt for their work during the event. The yearly litter march is held in late April in conjunction with Earth Day.
“I want to thank all of our partners, especially the Clean Communities Council for making this annual event a huge success”, Mack said.
