TRENTON – Witnesses to a stabbing inside a city bar yesterday helped lead police to the suspect, who was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, authorities said.

The 28-year-old victim and Esmerito Guzman-Fuentes were inside Rodriguez Bar on the 600 block of Federal Street around 1:45 a.m.

“They were in a bar, they had an argument, and the arrestee pulled out a knife,” Lt. Mark Kieffer said.

Guzman-Fuentes allegedly plunged the knife into the left side of the victim’s chest and ran from the bar. Police arrived to conduct an investigation, and Trenton EMS took the victim to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.

A handful of witnesses cooperated with police, giving them information about Guzman-Fuentes. Police were able to track him to the 700 block of Chambers Street, where he was arrested a short time later, Kieffer said.

No weapon was recovered, but Guzman-Fuentes was charged with aggravated assault.

The victim is expected to survive.
