TRENTON — A 61-year-old city man was shot and killed during gunfire in the West Ward last night that also wounded another man, police said this morning.

Berkely Walter McDaniel died following the 8:45 p.m. shooting on the 400 block of Stuyvesant Avenue, Lt. Mark Kieffer said. McDaniel was on the street when at least one gunman approached on foot and opened fire, Kieffer said.

Police said it was not immediately clear whether McDaniel was the intended target of the shooting.

Also hit was a 51-year-old man, who was shot in the shoulder. He was expected to survive. Police did not release his name.

The investigation is ongoing, Kieffer said. Suspect descriptions were not immediately available.

McDaniel’s killing is the 15th homicide of 2013 in a city that saw a total of 24 homicides last year. Including those killed, over 90 people have been struck by gunfire so far this year.

Anyone with information on the killing is asked to call police at (609) 989-4170 or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
