Lawrence, West Windsor and Trenton have been awarded a total of $132,800 in grants to improve the safety of roads with high crash rates, Sen. Shirley Turner said yesterday.

The state Department of Transportation Safe Corridor grants will be used to fund safety initiatives along the Route 1 corridor in Trenton, Lawrence and West Windsor. The towns may use the money to purchase police vehicles, radar equipment, computer hardware and software and salaries and pay police overtime, Turner said in a news release.

“Through this grant money, we can support local law enforcement without burdening local taxpayers,” she said.

Lawrence will receive $52,174, West Windsor $42,770 and Trenton $37,917.

The Safe Corridor grant money is allocated based on need, so municipalities with more crashes receive more money to support enhanced enforcement measures, the release said.

The program is supported by traffic ticket fines, which are doubled in designated Safe Corridors.

“The Safe Corridor grants will make a real difference in protecting the motorists, passengers and pedestrians who depend on Route 1 every day,” Turner said.
