on July 19, 2013 at 7:38 PM, updated July 19, 2013 at 7:43 PMThe New Jersey Historical Commission today approved more than $280,000 in grants to 12 Mercer County organizations for fiscal year 2014, officials said.
The grants will provide general operating support to organizations that provide education and other services relating to the history of the state, the governor’s office said in a news release.
“These grants will have an immediate impact in enhancing educational programming for students, expanding historic preservation efforts, facilitating new academic research and scholarship, and raising awareness of New Jersey’s essential place in American history,” Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno said in the release.
Princeton’s Historic Morven Inc. was granted $69,261 — the most of any Mercer County organization. The Historical Society of Princeton was granted $64,695.
The Lawrence Historic Society, Friends of the New Jersey State Museum, Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Howell Living History Farm, Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission, Old Barracks Museum, Preservation New Jersey, Trent House Association, Trenton Historical Society and the Trenton Museum Society all received grants.
The commission was able to fund 10 more organizations than last year. The money for the program comes from the state’s hotel/motel tax, the release said.
