Editorial: East Trenton Work Camp students show spirit of volunteerism is alive and well

Once again, young people from around the country have gathered in Trenton for a week of hard work.

Pass through the East Trenton neighborhood of the North Ward, and you’ll see a difference in the 60 properties that have been spruced up by the 400 or so students lodged at the Hedgepeth-Williams Elementary School.

When they depart Sunday, they will leave behind more than freshly painted homes and property improvements for 150 families. They will leave a sense of good will and optimism. It may fade faster than the bright red paint now distinguishing the Holt home on Poplar Street.

But, for now, it’s an emblem of what can be.
