New principal of Trenton Central High School calls state’s planned repairs insufficient

TRENTON — Thirteen years have passed since she previously served an administrator at Trenton Central High School, but Hope Grant, who will start as the school’s principal in the fall, said not much has changed.

The roof is still leaking, the paint is still peeling and the floors are still buckling, and the state has still not funded comprehensive repairs.

The state Schools Development Authority is responsible for major work on schools in Trenton and other poor towns, but the district decided on its own set aside funding for repairs to the roof, repaving of the parking lots and installion of new auditorium seats this summer.

Grant said she was glad to hear the SDA’s announcement last week that it has awarded a contract to an architect to begin “pre-design” services — the first step toward making repairs — but said the effort will only put a “band aid” on the real problem.

“What we really need is a new building,” Grant said.

Grant said students going to the school deserve to be taught in a safe and healthy environment.

“We expect to have the best for our students,” she said.

A representative for the SDA said last week that construction on the building’s exterior could begin next summer, while the interior fixes would be slated to start in summer 2015.
