TRENTON — Residents frustrated with ongoing violence in the city gathered yesterday at two separate events, demanding peace while also trying to create a safe atmosphere for city youth.

Hundreds of local families filled Cadwalader Park yesterday to attend Fathers and Men United for a Better Trenton’s seventh annual picnic. The group holds events such as the picnic to help steer children away from a life of crime and violence.

“We’re not going to be able to stop the violence, but we can minimize it by showing some love by doing events like this,” Wayne Council, founder of Fathers and Men United said. “These kids could be somewhere else, but they’re out here having a good time and enjoying themselves.”

Meanwhile, in Prospect Village, families of shooting victims gathered at the Stop the Violence, Break the Silence demonstration, held by Mothers of Prospect Village along with Trenton Housing Authority.

“We are all mothers and we all feel the pain and want to make a difference by letting others in our community know that we are taking a stand,” Roxanne Randolph said.
