on October 15, 2013 at 9:59 PM, updated October 15, 2013 at 10:07 PMTRENTON — The music is a little softer at Trenton Central High School this year, as the school’s marching band has shrunk to only four musicians, but the school board hopes to recruit more students with a broader appeal.
The board approved the creation of a district-wide marching band during its meeting tonight.
Norberto Diaz, the district’s supervisor of fine and performing arts, said the new program will hire one band director to go around to the district’s four middle schools and high schools to teach students interested in joining the marching band, and eventually bring all of the students from the different schools together to perform and practice. The board approved spending $7,000 to hire the director.
“It is a feeder program,” Diaz said.
The district’s middle schools were awarded a Vh1 Save the Music grant last year allowing them to purchase new instruments. Diaz said the grant has sparked an increase in the number of students taking music in the middle schools. He said in one middle school alone there are 40 students in the school band.
