TRENTON — A towering painting depicting George Washington’s visit to Trenton on his way to his 1789 presidential inauguration in New York has been relocated to its new home at Thomas Edison State College.

The painting by N.C. Wyeth, which is 17 feet tall and 12 feet wide, was commissioned in 1930 by First Mechanics National Bank, the legacy company to Wells Fargo, and had been on display at 1 West State St. ever since. When Wells Fargo decided to leave its large office space earlier this year to move to a new, smaller space on East State Street, the bank began to look for a new home for the painting.

Although bank officials looked to loan the piece to the state museum, they finally settled on a five-year loan to Thomas Edison, said John Thurber, the vice president of public affairs at the college.
