EWING — A developer is interested building 1,000 units of retail and apartments at the site of the former General Motors plant and Naval Warfare Center in the township, Mayor Bert Steinmann said today.

Speaking at roundtable discussion this morning, Steinmann said the township has made a tentative agreement with the developer, but he did not name the company because he said the township and the company are still in negotiations.

“We have an agreement in principle but we haven’t signed on the dotted line,” Steinmann said.

He said the township is working on putting together the financial package that will be offered to the company, including a PILOT agreement.

Steinmann made the announcement at a mayoral roundtable hosted by the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce at the Trenton Country Club. The event with mayors from a number of local towns was part of Trenton Small Business Week.

Ewing has been working for years to clean up and redevelop the long-vacant site on Parkway Avenue. A redevelopment plan calls for the creation of retail and residential space and, in the long term, envisions moving the West Trenton Train Station closer to the site.

A proposed redevelopment plan was drafted by planner Chuck Latini and earlier this year was shopped around to stakeholders, including SEPTA, NJ Transit and Mercer County, which operates the nearby Trenton–Mercer Airport.
