TRENTON — Mercer County residents turned in 313 pounds of prescription drugs this weekend as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, officials said.

The county sheriff’s office ran the local event in the parking lot of the county administration building in Trenton on Saturday, the office said.

“By disposing of unused prescription drugs from our medicine cabinets and drawers, we can prevent experimenting, theft, and chronic addictions,” Sheriff Jack Kemler said in a press release.

The sheriff’s office regularly participates in such take-back days in coordination with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the release said.

The program allows people to anonymously drop off unused and expired prescription drugs so that the drugs are not obtained by anyone who might abuse them, the release said.
