The Food and Drug Administration is proposing a ban on artificial trans fats, the partially solidified oils that increase levels of “bad” cholesterol, clog arteries and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Federal health officials estimate eliminating trans fats from the U.S. food supply could prevent at least 20,000 heart attacks each year.

That national step toward curbing the instance of preventable disease by encouraging better eating habits resonates on the state and local levels throughout the country.

New Jersey, for instance, has required that schools reduce the purchase of any products containing trans fats since 2007.

And in Trenton’s North Ward, the healthy food choices have increased exponentially with prominent displays of ready-to-eat snacks now stocked in corner stores and bodegas.
