Voter turnout a record low in NJ governor’s race

on November 09, 2013 at 3:00 AM, updated November 09, 2013 at 3:04 AMTRENTON — Voter turnout in Tuesday’s New Jersey gubernatorial came in under 40 percent, by far the lowest in a governor’s election since at least 1920.
Unofficial results from the state Division of Elections show just over 2 million people cast votes out of 5.5 million eligible voters — or about 37 percent.
The turnout number will rise somewhat as results from a handful of remaining precincts are reported. But it will remain far below the 47 percent mark four years ago that was a previous low.
