TRENTON — Jeyakumar Aiyathurai is the proud new owner of an old, boarded up firehouse at the corner of Pennington Avenue and Willow Street.

“What amazed me was the steps,” said Aiyathurai, who purchased the property from the city at auction this afternoon for the high bid of $23,000. The property was one of 19 the city tried to find buyers for today, in an attempt to generate revenue and get land and buildings back into circulation and onto the tax rolls again.

Aiyathurai, who owns the Paradise Bar and other properties in Trenton, said the former Engine Company No. 5, a brick building with intricate green cornice work and large windows, will be transformed into a rental property.

Only four of the properties on the block today did not receive any interest from bidders. The other 15 were sold.
