TRENTON— Mercer County is another step closer to ending a long dispute over the Jacobs Creek bridge on Bear Tavern Road.

The freeholder board will vote Thursday on a number of transfers that will send excess funds from other bridge projects to the $6.6 million venture that will replace Jacobs Creek bridge and reopen the section of Bear Tavern Road that connects to Jacobs Creek Road around this time next year, County Executive Brian Hughes said.

The replacement of the bridge has caused controversy as local residents complain that the historical integrity of the site will be compromised and the area will become less safe.

At a board meeting last night, Hughes told freeholders that the fund transfers were necessary in part because of the large cost of this particular bridge project, which also includes installing a new bridge on Jacobs Creek Road over Ewing Creek.
