Federal judge says ‘reliable indication’ of corruption by Trenton Mayor Tony Mack was enough for FBI wiretaps

TRENTON — Mayor Tony Mack slumped lower in his chair as the judge repeated the word “denied.”

Seated in federal court today, the indicted mayor watched as his defense attorney’s motions to have wiretap evidence thrown out were rejected. Of the 14 motions raised by lawyers for Mack and his co-defendants, four were denied, two decisions were deferred to a later date, and the rest are to be negotiated at a meeting with the defense and prosecution.

Judge Michael A. Shipp declined to exclude a single minute of wiretaps from the evidence the U.S. Attorney’s Office will use in the trial for Mack, his brother Ralphiel, and campaign supporter Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni. The trial is scheduled to begin in January.
