Times Holiday Appeal: Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing delivers blizzard boxes during inclement weather

Winter can be a difficult time of year for everyone. Snow and sleet can make getting around a challenge. There are even those dangerous times when no one can get out; blizzards, hurricanes and floods can be devastating to everyone.

So what happens when Meals on Wheels volunteers can’t get out to deliver their routes because it’s just not safe? How do the homebound survive?

By definition, the homebound cannot shop or cook for themselves, so in the event of a severe storm they are unable to get out and get emergency provisions. Many rely on family, friends and neighbors to help them have food on hand during bad weather. But there are still those who have no one. How do they eat?

Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing (MOWTE) helps provide food during these difficult times with blizzard boxes. Meals on Wheels purchases and receives donations of single-serving food items that are shelf stable (won’t go bad) that can be packed into a box or zip lock bag or on a tray that’s sealed. Each box contains six or seven items that include a protein, fruit, grain, juice or milk. These items are low in salt and fat for diet-sensitive clients. Sometimes there are low-sodium soups, cereals, tuna, pastas, peanut butter and crackers.
