Trenton council cuts 3 positions from budget in business administrator’s absence

TRENTON — Council members, angry after the business administrator postponed his budget hearing three times, slashed new positions from the administration department’s budget at their meeting tonight.

Councilwoman Marge Caldwell-Wilson said council gave Business Administrator Sam Hutchinson several opportunities to appear before them to discuss the new positions he was hoping to add to his department, but he has not been able to attend each time to defend his decision.

“He was well aware that this was controversial and he should have been here,” Caldwell-Wilson said.

Hutchinson was out of the office today, according to city employees and staff in the administration department.

Council voted to cut funding for three positions — with salaries totaling more than $106,000 — for the remainder of the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
