New Trenton orchestra announces New Year’s Eve show at War Memorial

TRENTON — The War Memorial Concert Hall will feature its traditional New Year’s Eve symphony this year even though the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra that has performed the event in the past is now defunct.

Musicians from that orchestra have formed the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra and will take the stage at the War Memorial at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, the group said in a news release.

The new group said it’s “ready to fill the void and even expand the region’s access to symphonic orchestral performances.”

The new orchestra formed after a small group of GTSO musicians began meeting in February to see what they could do to revitalize the orchestra.

The NJCP is confident in its ability to attract an audience because the region is highly educated and familiar with classical music, the release said.

The New Year’s Eve program includes works by Leonard Bernstein, Franz Liszt, Johann Strauss Jr. and George Gershwin. The feature attraction is the “Spellbound Concerto” by Miklos Rosza, the release said.
