Trenton council provides support for cash-strapped city EMS

TRENTON — The cash-strapped Trenton Emergency Medical Services group came to city council looking for city funding earlier this year and it has paid off. City Council approved adding more than $200,000 for the ambulance and EMS service to the budget.

Fire Director Quareeb Bashir said $105,000 will be earmarked to support TEMS, allowing the nonprofit group to use the funds in the way they see fit. The remaining $123,840 that was set aside in the temporary budget approved by council, will go to pay for specific materials.

TEMS offers EMS service to the entire city and is funded in a partnership with both hospitals in Trenton — Capital Health and St. Francis. Bashir said that from 1985 through 2010, the city had provided some funding to keep the service operating, so this resurgence in that commitment will help to ensure ambulance service is made available to all city residents.
