State investigates Trenton middle school following case of Legionnaires’ disease

TRENTON — Officials from the state Department of Health and Senior Services and the Trenton Health Department were at Grace A. Dunn Middle School today investigating a case of Legionnaires’ disease involving a custodial worker at the school, a state spokeswoman said.

State health officials were notified this week of the case of the bacterial infection in the custodian, said spokeswoman Donna Leusner.

“The school district is taking all appropriate action,” Leusner said. “It hired a water consultant and will be remediating the water system when the building is closed for the holiday break.”

Today was the last day of classes for two weeks until the school reopens in the New Year on Jan. 6. It is not clear tonight what measures, if any, are being taken to determine whether any children had contracted the disease or required medical attention.
