Trenton middle school declared free of Legionnaires’ disease bacterium

TRENTON — The water system at Grace A. Dunn Middle School has been treated effectively for legionella, the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease, a district official said yesterday as students returned to the school following winter break.

Just before the winter break, district officials reported that a custodial worker had been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease. With the school closed for two weeks for the winter vacation, the district hired Environmental Connections, a Trenton industrial hygiene firm, to remove the bacteria from the school’s water system and do further testing.

On Dec. 27, the test results showed the remediation was effective in treating the hot water storage tanks and all but two of the fixtures in the school, Superintendent Fransisco Duran said yesterday.
