Firefighters battle four fires in Trenton as crews from nearby counties assist

TRENTON — Four separate fires raged at industrial and residential buildings in the city today, injuring four people, including two pregnant women, and displacing 50 residents whose homes were damaged.

Trenton firefighting resources were stretched thinly, and crews from throughout Mercer County and surrounding areas responded with additional equipment and manpower, including from Burlington, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex and Monmouth counties.

The fires were on Taylor, Monmouth, Centre and Genesee streets.

A five-alarm fire on the 100 block of Taylor Street broke out about 10:15 a.m. at a vacant warehouse, fire officials said. Crews worked to control the fire for about five hours as smoke billowing into the sky could be seen from miles away.

Fire officials said the department had contained the fire but that it is still burning in the center of the warehouse, which is estimated to be about 100 feet wide and deep.
