on January 27, 2014 at 10:41 PM, updated January 27, 2014 at 10:57 PMTRENTON — A state proposal to rebuild crumbling and moldy Trenton Central High School from the ground up received unanimous support from the Trenton school board at their meeting tonight.
The school board heard a presentation about the $130 million, four-year construction project from the newly installed CEO of the state Schools Development Authority Charles McKenna, who has pledged to fast-track the replacement of the school following years of failure to remediate conditions there.
The presentation was followed by a unanimous school board vote to approve going ahead with further discussion and planning. The SDA board will vote on the project at their Feb. 5 meeting.
McKenna made his presentation to a standing-room only crowd inside the auditorium at the district office building, and he sometimes was forced to yell above the roar of cheering teachers, students, parents and community members to explain his vision for the new high school.
The project would mean preserving the historic areas of the 82-year-old school, including the entryway, auditorium, clock tower and the three-story wings adjacent to the entryway of the school, McKenna said.
