C.A.S.H. Campaign, United Way of Greater Mercer talk taxes

TRENTON — For most people, there are few things more headache-inducing than tax season.

But it also provides relief to many people in the bottom half of the income bracket who can now pay off old bills, make car repairs and pay tuition with their tax refunds.

Mercer C.A.S.H. Campaign and United Way of Greater Mercer County have set up volunteer income tax assistance sites across the county to help people earning less than $50,000 a year file their federal and state tax returns free of charge and learn about the earned income tax credit, which may help boost tax refunds for low-income families.

The tax credit, which can be worth up to $6,044, coupled with a $1,000 child-care tax credit and an additional 20 percent from the state’s earned-income tax credit can result in a sizable tax refund, said Herb Klein, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Mercer County.

For a family of five, who could receive up to $10,000, the subsidy is a lifeline, Klein said.
