Trenton council approves 4 long-due recreation deptartment contracts
Jenna Pizzi / February 20, 2014
City council tonight approved four recreation department contracts that had been languishing without action dating back to 2011, but deferred voting on the city budget that carries a tax increase. All four contracts are for improvement projects at different city parks, and although they were put out to bid, were never brought to city council for approval until now. Three of the contracts — for improvements at Calhoun Street Park, Hetzel Field Park and Greg Grant Park — went to bid in October and a winning bidder was selected for each project. The fourth is a $15,000 change order to Rocon Construction Group for work completed in 2011 at George Page Park.
Earlier this month, council members questioned what took so long to bring them to the body and business administrator Sam Hutchinson said he could not explain the delay, but added that he refused to sign off on recreation department matters.
He said bids would normally be processed by the department chief, but since the recreation department was without a leader at the time, that duty fell to mayoral aide Anthony Roberts. As a result, the contract resolutions were pulled from the docket at the Feb. 6 council meeting.
