Mercer County school districts can expect increased state aid

It may not be a huge payday for most Mercer County school districts, but each one can expect an increase in aid from the state Department of Education — mostly between 0.1 and 2.6 percent — this year.

The Hopewell Valley Regional School District will receive $2.3 million in state aid, a 9.9 percent increase over last year’s figures, by far the largest increase in the county.

But more than $17,600 of the funding is earmarked for the district’s new school choice program, two offerings that Superintendent Thomas Smith said would help bring new students into the district as enrollment declines.

There are 13 enrollment spots in the elementary-level science, technology, engineering and mathematics program and the high school-level performing arts program, Smith said.
