Trenton sanitation department goes way over budget dealing with weather

TRENTON — This winter, the city’s public works department — whose garbage trucks pull double duty as snow plows — has been in high demand.

Luis Mollinedo, the department’s director, said he lucked out yesterday when the snow that fell was less than the foot that had been forecast, giving his crew the chance to pick up garbage as scheduled instead of having to postpone pickup.

Mollinedo said his department has received phone calls throughout the winter from residents confused about when to put their garbage cans on the curb and when they would be emptied.

“Just the fact that we are picking them up late and sometimes we don’t get to the garbage till two, three days after their normal scheduled day,” Mollinedo said.
