Trenton Mayor George Muschal hopes to repair, reopen shuttered Skelton library branch before July
TRENTON — Fallen plaster from the ceiling lay on the floor; and warped, water damaged carpet was peeling up in the second-floor children’s room of the Skelton Library branch in Trenton’s South Ward. But Mayor George Muschal, on a tour of the shuttered library facility yesterday, said conditions were better than he had expected.
Muschal toured the library branch to determine if it could be fixed and reopened.
It was closed in 2010 along with three other city branches, owing to a budget shortfall.
The branches were reopened by former Mayor Tony Mack to serve as his learning centers, but were open only sporadically and fell victim to decay, theft, vandalism and insufficient maintenance.
Following his conviction on charges of conspiracy to extort bribes from city developers, Mack was ousted from office last month by a state judge. Muschal has been appointed by city council to fill the remainder of Mack’s term.
