Health rankings help NJ counties get ahead

Monument Elementary School in Trenton opened more than 60 years ago, but its first playground — designed by students, paid for by grants and donations and built by volunteers — was not built until 2012.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s annual study identifying the healthiest counties in New Jersey played a supporting role, too, said Darrin Anderson Sr., deputy director for the New Jersey Partnership for Kids, a foundation-funded project focused on reducing child obesity.

Having access to information about why Mercer County has ranked in the middle of the pack of the state’s 21 counties helped community leaders figure out what they could do to address the problem. Mercer ranked 12 in 2013, according to the latest study that was released today.
