Trenton council tackles election mix-up

The city clerk will be allowed to hire assistance to help guide the city through the election process following a mistake where he told candidates to submit far too few signatures than they actually needed to get on the ballot.

However, it is yet undecided what exactly the consultant would do, who it might be or if that person would be paid.

The clerk, Richard Kachmar, said he consulted the wrong state election law when calculating the number of signatures candidates for mayor and council should submit, causing the unprecedented mix-up.

The vote followed a lengthy executive session called to discuss Kachmar, before which Councilwoman Kathy McBride, who is also running for mayor, had said she was seeking to have Kachmar suspended from office without pay while an investigation into his actions was ongoing. She dropped that request after the closed-door meeting, but voted against allowing him to hire a consultant.
