Trenton school board approves $302M budget

The Trenton school board approved a $302 million budget for the 2014-15 school year during its meeting Monday night.

Business Administrator Jayne Howard said the district was able to make up for a $10.5 million gap by making cuts to the central administration and not by taking funding away from the city’s public schools.

“Our funding trickles down to the students,” Howard said. “The schools were not affected.”

Because the state aid, which accounts for 75 percent of the district’s budget, stayed relatively flat and the number of students enrolling in choice or charter schools increased, more than $6 million in funding was taken from the district, Howard said during the meeting.
