TRENTON – The state board in charge of school building projects approved the leases this morning for the temporary classroom locations that will be used by Trenton Central High School while the current school is being rebuilt.

The state Schools Development Authority gave the OK to lease the two former Catholic schools, but the rental price is still under negotiation, said SDA spokeswoman Kristen MacLean.

The leases are the final piece of the plan to split up the TCHS students during construction. The ninth-grade learning community will be moved to 31 Chancery St., the former site of Emily Fisher Charter School, and the visual and performing arts and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning communities will be housed at a location rented on the 500 block of Chestnut Avenue, the former site of the Immaculate Conception School.

Students from two of TCHS’ learning communities — hospitality restaurant tourism and business and also communications – will attend classes at the current Daylight/Twilight Alternative School, which is owned by the district.

The controversial plan to move up to 450 students from Daylight/Twilight Alternative High School in downtown Trenton to the Cadwalader School in the West Ward brought concern from students and parents at the school for troubled district students that they would be targeted by gangs. The Daylight/Twilight students argued that their school was specifically built for their needs and should not be taken away from them.
