Educational Opportunity Fund award goes to Latino community leader in Trenton

TRENTON — Roberto Hernandez, who helped found El Centro, a family resource center in the heart of the city’s Latino community, received the 2014 Thomas H. Kean Outstanding Educational Opportunity Fund Alumni Award earlier this month.

The Educational Opportunity Fund is a 46-year-old program financed by the state that provides needy students with the financial and educational help they need to succeed in college.

The award is given to alumni of the program who have made outstanding contributions in their community and have shown professional success.

“It’s a collective effort of the hundreds of people that have touched my life, have been supportive of me,” Hernandez said. “It’s not just me. It’s everybody — all my teachers, all my family. … I’m just very fortunate to be able to do what I love doing.”
