Trenton Mayor George Muschal axes city fire director

on April 11, 2014 at 6:05 PM, updated April 11, 2014 at 6:09 PMTRENTON – Fire Director Qareeb Bashir said he was fired by Mayor George Muschal today.
“It is totally unfair and it is unjustified,” Bashir said, although he declined to say what reason Muschal gave for his dismissal.
“He has no basis for this,” Bashir said. “And I can easily do two things – one is to clearly show the positive things that have taken place in this department under my leadership.”
He also said if Muschal attempts to make any allegations against him by “trying to put a spin on it” he will present the facts.
Muschal did not respond to several messages left on his cell phone and with his office today.
Lisa Ryan, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Community Affairs, said the department’s division of local government services has not received any requests from Muschal for approval to terminate any department directors. The DCA approved Bashir when he was hired.
