on April 23, 2014 at 7:00 AM, updated April 23, 2014 at 7:08 AMTRENTON — To help educate the community about prostate cancer, the United Way of Great Mercer County is hosting free prostate screenings at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen Thursday, officials announced this week.
Men who participate also will receive free haircuts from two local barbers on site, said Eric Williams, a community impact associate with United Way.“A barbershop is the cornerstone of America. When you go into a barbershop, you can talk about anything, so why not talk about something important like prostate cancer?” Williams said.
“A lot of these individuals coming into TASK are homeless, so why not bring barbers to them to make it that much easier on everybody?”
A nurse-practitioner from the city’s Henry J. Austin Health Center will be screening participants at TASK on Escher Street from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and educating clients about prostate cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
