Trenton Water Works hiring ordinance tabled

TRENTON — The ordinance that would allow the Trenton Water Works utility to hire employees living outside the city was tabled at today’s council meeting due to concerns that it would lead to a rash of out-of-towners taking jobs from city residents.

The move to hold off on the proposal came from Councilwoman Marge Caldwell-Wilson, who worried that if city council were to pass the ordinance as-is, they would no longer have say over who the utility could hire.

Instead, she asked if language could be added to “tighten up” the ordinance by inserting a sunset provision that would only allow Water Works to hire noncity residents for a limited time in order to fill several high-level positions that have been open for several years. Otherwise, she said, the utility should be looking to train its own employees and promoting from within.
