Ewing exhibit looks at lasting mark General Motors had on town
Wendy Plump | May 21, 2014Ellie Calcagno is not sure who it was, but someone saved a copy of the Trenton Chamber of Commerce Magazine from November 1938.
A good thing, too, as its stories and advertisements trumpet the arrival of the General Motors Corp. in Ewing, and the outpouring of goodwill and excitement that surrounded it.
“A hearty welcome to the Tern-stedt Trenton Division,” reads one ad placed by the Whitehead Bros. Rubber Co. “Welcome to Ternstedt Trenton Division, GM Corporation,” reads another from John A. Roebling’s Sons.
Ads from bankers, hardware supply stores, bakers, hotels, engravers, and even Case’s Pork Pack Co. were taken out in the chamber publication in recognition of what would be a transformative event for Ewing’s rural population.
As the GM property here on Parkway Avenue — its buildings razed and its grounds the target of cleanup efforts — enters its latest phase of potential development, Calcagno has put together a comprehensive exhibit on the plant’s history and people.
