The Mercer County Board of Freeholders trimmed $1.5 million from the county’s proposed $305.3 million budget that will increase the county tax rate by 2 cents. The cuts were made in several departments including to the departments of Public Safety, Law and Justice and Administration.

The $1.5 million decrease amounts to a less than a third of a cent, effectively maintaining the budget’s tax rate of 60 cents per $100 of valuation, which is a 2-cent increase from last year’s spending plan, Mercer County Chief Financial Officer David Miller said Tuesday night.

The proposed budget was amended Tuesday to include grants the county has received since the initial budget presentation in February, when it was proposed at $300.6 million, Miller said.

It is scheduled for a public hearing and adoption when the freeholders meet at 6 p.m. June 12 at the McDade Administration Building in Trenton.
