Nostalgic day for Trenton Central High School alumni who bid farewell to school

TRENTON — Phil Voorhees still remembers walking the halls of Trenton Central High School, the friends he made there, and cheering on the basketball team from the bleachers in the gym.

Yesterday was a nostalgic day for Voorhees, who returned for the first time in 75 years to the school he graduated from in 1939.

“It feels great,” the 93-year-old Ewing resident said. “I remember everything. It looks very much the same.”

By midafternoon, at least 1,000 alumni and family members had wandered through the doors for an opportunity to say goodbye and take home a piece of the aging Chambers Street building before it is demolished to make way for the new school.

Voorhees’ grandson, Steve, said the day was a trip back through time.
