Trenton architect says recycling old structures is the ultimate example of thinking green

TRENTON — Outside Annabelle Radcliffe-Trenner’s office window on West State Street in Trenton, the buildings — some neglected, some abandoned, some glorious — give testimony to her passionate belief in architectural restoration, and to the beauty of old construction.

Stretching from the State House complex down the street and beyond her firm, Historic Building Architects, the line of Richardsonian-style brownstones, brick Italianate Victorians, English tudors, and Colonial fieldstones offers an index to the architectural riches of the city.

These buildings and other old structures from Trenton to Philadelphia to Maine, from castles to churches to lighthouses, are the reason Radcliffe-Trenner founded her preservation firm 20 years ago. They are the reason she studied architecture and conservation in her native London and in Scotland.
