Trenton capitol complex to host state’s 350th birthday with family festival

TRENTON — It was 350 years ago when Charles II of England granted a large portion of land on the east coast of North America to his brother James, Duke of York, who then gave a piece of the valuable land to two loyal noblemen, Sir George Carteret and John Lord Berkeley.

Berkeley and Carteret then sold the land — which would soon be called New Jersey — and allowed the settlers to have political and religious freedom, making New Jersey more ethnically diverse than many other colonies.

It was in 1664 when New Jersey was given its name.

On Sunday, June 22, the state will celebrate its birthday with a family festival at the Capitol Complex in Trenton, hosted by the Trenton Downtown Association.
