Trenton third-graders display artistic, intellectual gains through Princeton program

Teaching children about art isn’t simply about putting paint to a canvas or turning materials into sculpture, especially for a group of Trenton third-graders who participated in a yearlong art program offered through Princeton University.

Learning about art can have a positive impact across the curriculum, and it can help students learn to expand their thinking.

“We believe that art is very important because it teaches you how to think creatively,” Norberto Diaz, supervisor of visual and performing arts, told the students at the Board of Education building as the district on Tuesday marked the end of the Frances Lange Public Schools Program for this year with an art exhibit and awards ceremony.

Creative thinking paired with logical thinking, Diaz said, can lead to great success, and he told the children about Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who coupled their artistic and logical thinking and, with a little inspiration from an art teacher, created the award-winning cartoon, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
